Charles E. "Charlie" Brittin SPRINGFIELD - Charles E. "Charlie" Brittin, 55, of Springfield, passed away at p.m. on April 6, at his home. Charlie was born Decem in Normal.   One of the first subjects to fascinate Brittin as a photographer was a sleepy Venice Beach, where he took pictures “freighted with a hushed beauty and forlorn sweetness,” according to the book.

Plate_36 CHARLES BRITTIN, LOS ANGELES, CA, SEPTEMBER Los Angeles, Getty Research Institute. News media interviewing CORE activists waging a sit-in and hunger strike outside the Los Angeles Board of Education offices to raise awareness of segregation and inequality in the public schools. Plate_59 UNKNOWN PHOTOGRAPHER, OLYMPIA, WA, FEBRUARY.   Observing an L.A. Photographer: fifth in a series Photographer Charles Brittin is not as revered in Los Angeles as his work deserves. In the s and '60s, he documented the Los Angeles avant-garde artists like Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin and John n's friend, the artist Wallace Berman, introduced him to the Beat culture and social life of the Ferus Gallery, a legendary exhibition.

A quiet documentarian of his time, Charles Brittin photographed Venice in the s and s, leaving an unparalleled record of the social and artistic movements of the era. Though best known for his coverage of the avant-garde and beat scenes, Brittin was nonetheless an acute observer of the racial and economic disparities of the area.
